BETT 2010 City Learning Centre @ BETT 2010  BETT 2010

Most of the CLC team attended the recent BETT 2010 show at Olympia in London. Described by the organisers as being ‘the world’s largest educational technology event’, BETT provided an interesting insight into future learning environments and devices.

This is what our staff thought of BETT 2010:

“The show felt quieter than previous years with a number of gaps where stands hadn’t been taken up. These are the new-to-me products that caught my eye:

GCSEPOD- “Revision materials for use on computers or handheld devices. Works on iPods as well as laptops and desktops”

EPSON Projector- “Doesn’t require a whiteboard in order to work like a whiteboard. The Epson uses a short-throw projector with a clever add-on. £1500”

Power Squared- “Provider of laptop batteries and power supply units as well as multi-battery charging solutions”

Phil McLear, CLC Manager

“My favourite items at BETT were:

Casio ‘Green Slim’ LED Projector- “A lamp-free projector, eliminating the need for expensive replacement bulbs. The Green Slim has a life of approximately 20,000 hours, 10 times longer than most conventional projectors”

NEC 3D Projector- “Already deployed in a number of cinemas, NEC are set to introduce their 3D projectors into education in the near future. This is an exciting development in projection technology”

Bretford mPod- “Developed in conjunction with City Learning Centre Challenge, the mPod is already proving to be very popular. At BETT, Bretford showcased a new range of portable charging and storage solutions for a variety of devices including iPods and netbooks”

John Atkinson, CLC Technician

“As a first time visitor to BETT I was struck by the scale of the event and the vast array of new devices on show. Although I was only there for one day I managed to see a great deal. I was particularly impressed with the following:

Omi- “This was extremely eye-catching; an image is projected onto the floor from where it can be manipulated by the user. A lack of varied accompanying software could be a concern however there is the potential for new ideas to be developed. I could envisage this system being particularly useful in a Special Educational Needs setting”

Luminis 3D Screen- “I found this particularly impressive- a 3D display without the need for glasses. It will be interesting to see how this could be incorporated into everyday educational use, but I’m sure it will fascinate young learners”

Tim Roche, Projects and Administration

“Well it was my first time attending BETT, and to be honest I didn’t realise how much technology there was in education. There were some really good ideas but some not as good as others. I had a few favourites that I think would have a good impact on schools.

nLighten – “These are 60 inch high definition touch screen monitors. These monitors I liked a lot because they are not as daunting as a whiteboard. So children would be comfortable with this in a class room because they see them at home”

connectED – “They use PSPs in schools this is good because the device can play video, audio and even connect to the internet. I think this is really good because a child may have 1 at home and they would be more comfortable with using the PSP”

Ateeq Rafiq, Project Administrator

See you all at BETT 2011!
